Persistence

Closeup of second potato showing it actually started growing new potatoes.

A few weeks ago I was looking for something on one of the shelves in the basement. Wrapped in and around the bottom shelf were several long potato vines. My first thought was “where did these come from?” Then I remembered that we had some potatoes on the shelf earlier this Spring. Two of them apparently “escaped” the bag before I planted the remaining ones in our garden. For about five months they had grown in the basement with no soil or water and very little light. What persistence!

Too often I find myself wanting to quit a task when seemingly insurmountable difficulties arise or it seems the results are happening too slowly. In the future, however, I will try to remember the two little potatoes that did the very best that they could with the limited resources available to them.
